A little known fact is included in every McAfee SuperDAT is a free command line version of their virus scanning software. Why is this useful when products such as AVG and avast exist you ask. Neither one of these support being installed on Windows 2003 Server (at least w/o buying it that is).
My solution, create a GUI frontend for McAfee's command line virus scanner. So I present, drumroll please: McAfeeGUI 0.1.1.1 (applause rings out across the globe ;-)) (yes it really has gone through 12 code revisions already, don't ask).
Its a very simple gui thats adds a system tray icon w/ the following options for McAfee's command line virus scanner:
- Start/Stop/Check Status of a Full System Scan (All drives/All Folders/All Folders)
- Update your virus definitions
- Update you SuperDAT (required to run)
- View a log of all past virus scans
Post install instructions: (No longer needed the new version of the installer automatically does this for you)
- Run avscan.exe (Default location: C:\Program Files\SFF Tools\mcafeegui\avscan.exe)
- Choose Update\SuperDAT
- Choose Update\Definitions
- Run Scan (Scan\Start)
From then on you'll be able to run the software by running avscan.exe and running a scan.
Optional Features:
- Scheduled System Scan (create a scheduled task for schedscan.exe)
- Scheduled Virus Definitions Update (create a scheduled task for update.exe)
In order to work properly this software requires the following software:
Enjoy.
P.S. Justin this ones for you, thanks for the idea.
UPDATE 4/19/07: I create a new installer for the software. This installer will automatically download and install the latest SuperDAT and Virus Definitions once it has finished installing the software. I came to realize, why make the end user do this, when I can have the installer do it for you.
